Types of Independent States with respect to National Self-determination
I Types of Independent State Currently Applicable
1. Single nation-state, no sizable additional territorial ethno-national
or linguistic group within its territory or
confederate nation-state broadly dispersing
power to two or more territorial nations within (i.e., Brazil, Switzerland)..
2. Nation-state. 90-99% one nation with one or more sizable additional
territorial ethno-national or linguistic groups within
its territory (i.e., China, USA)
3. Nation-state. 70-89% one nation with one or more sizable additional
territorial ethno-national or linguistic groups
within its territory (i.e., United Kingdom, Turkey).
4. Nation-state. 50-69% one nation with one or more sizable additional
territorial ethno-national or linguistic groups within its
territory (i.e., (Spain, Bolivia).
5. Aspiring nation-state, general use of broad unifying language in
a state only recently literate (i.e., Tanzania).
6. Autocratic state, not broadly based, but with a majority language
(i.e., Saudi Arabia).
7. Minority ethnic group and/or a foreign-trained elite usually using
a minority imperial language to govern
(i..e., India, Pakistan, Nigeria).
II. Types of Historical Independent State not Currently Applicable
A. Majority nation-state locally but a minority with overseas
empire (i.e. Britain, circa 1803-1960).
B. Supra-national contiguous state (i.e. Soviet Union, circa 1919 to
1991)
C. Contiguous Soviet-allied and dominated “independent” state (i.e.,
Poland, 1944-1989).
D. Overseas Soviet-allied and dominated “independent” state (i.e.,
Ethiopia, 1978-1991).
E. Powerful ethnic group dominates as being “superior” to others (i.e.
Nazi Germany 1938-1944).
